CHOCOLATE BUNNY WARS!

Below you will see two very cute foil wrapped chocolate bunnies. The first is made by the Swiss chocolate giant Lindt & Sprungli, the second little fellow is from master chocolate maker Hauswirth based in Austria. Both chocolate bunnies look similar because this is a traditional chocolate mould shape that dates back to the 1930s. This particular chocolate bunny mould shape is a successful one because it is very sturdy and actually quite light in weight considering the size of the chocolate bunny.

But here is the difference between the two chocolate bunnies: Lindt & Sprungli makes many millions more of these bunnies then any other chocolate company. Because of this, Lindt decided they needed to protect their gold bunny investment and trademarked the three dimensional shape as an exclusive design shape and look to Lindt & Sprungli.

Lindt claims this is a unique shape and bunny likeness exclusive to their company. Lindt has also brought lawsuits against chocolate companies, like Hauswirth, that have been making this bunny shaped chocolate for many years before Lindt even started doing it. Lindt infact won a settlement against the German chocolate maker Hans Riegelein & Sohn which forced them to stop making gold foiled chocolate bunnies of similar shape. Lindt's claim is that the competitor's gold chocolate bunnies are confusingly similar and that this particular look is a Lindt exclusive. The European Austrian High Court will make the final ruling on if Lindt will capture the cute bunny.

  1. Which bunny would you recommend? I'm interested in a great sample of organic chocolate. Which would you recommend.

  2. Hi Carol,

Thank you for writing. Of the two chocolate Easter bunnies mentioned above, I'm partial to the one on the right. As far as organic chocolate I recommend our Peru Organic Chocolate: http://www.santabarbarachocolate.com/index.php?cPath=28
You could make your own organic chocolate bunnies for Easter. Make a milk chocolate ganache and pour it out in a pan. Let it set up and then cut it with a bunny cookie cutter and decorate like a cookie. Voila, cute Easter bunny chocolates!
Milk Chocolate Ganache which you can cut:
    16 oz Organic Milk Chocolate
    6 oz Heavy Cream
    >Bring your cream to a very slight boil (don't scald though).
    >Pour your cream over the organic milk chocolate and stir to a smooth emulsion.
    >Pour into a sheet pan and set in the refrigerated.
    >Once your organic chocolate ganache is set hard, cut into bunny shapes and decorate.
    Yummy! :) -Jason
